Discount on Police Summons

April 30, 2009 mindspring Leave a comment

I pulled this off the MYEG website. I am actually quite surprised to learn that one can get a discount on a traffic summons. Meaning that is you commit a traffic offense , that offense will cost you less if you pay up sooner rather than later. Somehow I feel the messaging of this proposition is all wrong.

I think summons should work the other way – upon committing an offense, there is a base rate you will pay then the longer you take to pay the more expensive it becomes. People should not be able to pay below the minimum amount.

For speeding it is RM300. Assuming you pay in 30 days, the police will give you a 30% discount. What they should do is to set the base rate at RM210 and if you don’t pay in 30 days it goes to Rm300 and then next 30 days RM400 and so on.

A discount only encourages bargaining and becomes a motivation for corruption. Whereas a non negotiable publish rate eliminates bargaining and makes corruption very difficult.

Here it what it says in the MYEG website:

PDRM SUMMONS ALERT REGISTRATION – [FREE]

For selected summons that are paid within 1 month of issuance, PDRM offers a discount scheme of 30% to 50% from the original amount.

Normally you do not receive any notices that you have been issued summons until after this one month grace period. Therefore, you have no choice but to pay the summons amount in full.

By subscribing to MyEG’s new FREE service, we will inform and remind you via email if you have any new summons. Now, you will always have the option to get this discount scheme. Furthermore, as you receive the summons notification early, you can still remember who was driving the car at that time and be more careful in the future.

In the event that you are very certain that you were never in the area mentioned in the summons (as you have received the summons early), you may refer to PDRM for a review on the photos taken by paying PDRM a small fee.

Bush Pardons Osama bin Laden

January 22, 2009 mindspring Leave a comment

From Huffington Post

Posted January 19, 2009 | 10:55 PM (EST)

WASHINGTON, DC: In a stunning late-hour development, President George W. Bush has granted Osama bin Laden a pardon for the murder of more than 2,700 Americans in the fall of 2001.

“This kinda came out of nowhere,” said a White House aide who requested anonymity. “I wouldn’t have put bin Laden on the short list myself. On the other hand, maybe this is the president’s way of finding closure. Because … y’know … he wasn’t actually able to kill bin Laden, or capture him, or even keep him from making all those (expletive) videos. I mean, jeez, let’s face it: Osama bin Laden is basically a one-man Netflix of cave movies.

The aide paused, then went on to say, “Can you believe this dude (Bush) was actually president for eight (expletive) years? What were we thinking? Seriously, what the (expletive) were we thinking?”

The aide began weeping quietly. “May God have mercy on me for my role in the unfathomable travesty that was the Bush administration.”

Conservative columnist William Kristol insisted the pardon made sense.

“George W. Bush is a brilliant strategist. I’m sure he has a good reason for this pardon. I’ll figure it out.”

Kristol sucked his thumb for a few minutes, lost in thought. He was then distracted by a brightly colored piece of string.

A passerby, told of the bin Laden pardon, offered a possible explanation:

“Maybe Bush is trying to smoke him out. Wasn’t that the plan?”

Why have I paused from blogging

January 10, 2008 mindspring 2 comments

Tonight over dinner Stephen Doss asked why I have slowed down / stopped blogging…..  the question took me a bit by surprise casueI didnt really think that my blog made any real difference…..  aside from the 200 odd people who visit daily – and I thank them for doign so.

My answer to Stephen was that stuff that comes out in the news is already so stupid that it is no more worth the effort blogging.  Even looking at Malaysia Today, they are having a hard time putting out some good stuff.

I think we have reached political gridlock where the politicians fear making policy decisions and hence ae reduced to dumb statements.

He asked me for an example so I gave him one…..  the whole noise noise from the crying minister about free schooling and now parents are up in arms for having to pay the few hundred ringgits to funny fees….

Any economist of half brained person will tell you for a fact that anything which is free has no value and therefore free schooling, as noble as it sounds has got no value.   And becasue free has no value it gets abused.

Then we have Choi Soi Lek – what can  I say other than he has showed us what accountability is all about.  As an elected representative – he is just a slimy and a scum bag like most others who take girls to hotels, but at least when he gets caught – he does the right thing and steps down.

I dont know why the police were making such a big deal about going after the person who put the camera there and teh DVD pedelars who were pushing the video’s.  How come they were not as responsive when the VK Lingam video surfaced?

We had another 2 bus crashes at the Jelapang toll – why cant the works minister and transport minister take the health minister’s cue and quit. Have they no shame? Or do they need to be shamed before they quit?

Then there is talk that Azmi Khalid should be Perlis MB casue his wife will be good for the development of the state… Well UMNO dudes – that’s your cue to go get married to another PYT…  maybe Datuk K should be made PM because of Siti Nurhaliza…. by extension of logic it make sense.

On the election front, printer are crying foul as a lot of business – printing flaglines, banners etc has gone to China.   I don think these printer realise that Malaysia is now a high tech economy and sophisticated society. Stuff like printing etc. should be done in the third world. Malaysia should do first world stuff like yacht racing aka monsoon cup,,,
