The state of Selangor has come forward to fulfill its election promise of giving each household free water, at least the first 20 cubic meters of usage. The estimated cost of this is purported to be RM 17 million per month. What is important to note is that the Rm17 million is really taxpayers money, so it is not free.
How do I equate free water and bribery? I equate this to bribery simply because it was a promise made to secure votes as opposed to a policy issue to drive change. A political freebie using taxpayers money.
While the underlying motive is probably to lessen peoples financial burden, but if that is the case, there are more effective ways of distributing RM17 million a month, especially if it is going to be in perpetuity.
My position is that, whatever policy decisions governments make, it must be done to shape desired behavior. In this specific example, the state government could have mandated the 17 million to reward consumers who significantly use less water than previously. They would then get a rebate on their water usage. Or water usage targets can be introduced, and every household that is within the target usage will be rewarded with a rebate. The long term goal should be towards conservation of water and at the same time provides financial relief.
sounds like politic wang, however given inlieu of free goods. If the state government were sincere in doing what it purport to do – the 1st immediate action is to provide access water to those without. and secondly to those orphanage
so you are now saying the BN government is bribing the whole nation by giving the electricity subsidy. Bravo! such a great analogy!

Selangor = free water
Penang = free local council saman
Looks like Pakatan Rakyat (I like the sound of “Pembangkang”) gifts, tokens, presents, bonus, hadiah, duit kopi for its supporters!
If the Selangor State Govt @ Pembangkang wants to help the rakyat and the poor by giving the first 20m cubic water for free, I think the idea is not entirely correct. Unless the State govt has detailed consumer info and a hi-tech way of billing, I’d say even the rich would enjoy the “free water”.
Why not use the $ = to 6 Million consumers x first 20m cubic to sponsor water infra projects to the poor or pay the citizens registered under the Program Rakyat Termiskin??? Much more noble kan??
End of the day, somebody has to pay or bear the cost of the “free water” as somebody has to treat the water from Selangor sungai which is contaminated by the factories and the pig farms discharges.
Just a simple thought from an ordinary citizen
