Raja Petra, Malaysia Today, Bloggers, Sedition & Tipping Points

One of the good books on the market to day is titled TIPPING POINT by Malcom Gladwell. It is a go0d book to read if we want to understand why some trends and fads catch on and die but some just grow and grow.

The word “Tipping Point”, for example, comes from the world of epidemiology. It’s the name given to that moment in an epidemic when a virus reaches critical mass. It’s the boiling point. It’s the moment on the graph when the line starts to shoot straight upwards.

I highly suspect that in MALAYSIA, blogging is about to hit its tipping point. Some times when we do things where we expect a certain outcome, we end up getting the reverse. In management we call it unintended consequences and what I am noticing is that the more “coercion” there is on bloggers … the more people start blogging. And there are 2 aspects to blogging: those who comment and those who graduate from commenting to starting up their own blogs.

I for example am a blogger who started by posting comments in various blogs – MT, Screenshots, Rocky’s BRU, Susan Loone, etc but the day ROCKY was sued, that was my tipping point and I launched MindaCergas. I find blogging healthy because it allows me to express my thoughts but more importantly blogs allow me to keep track of these thoughts.

The difference between blogging and coffee shop talk is that in coffee shop talk, my stories no matter how untrue become so believable because of voice, expression, energy etc. Whereas in Blogging all of that is removed hence when people read blogs their minds are much more objective as they are not caught up in the moment.

One of the greatest problems in Malaysia is our short memory. Electronic media – the combination of Google and the internet circumvents the short memory problem because with a few key strokes, all the information comes up. So when the Deputy IGP said we must discard the “I don’t know attitude,” I wasn’t sure who he was referring to, so I did quick google search with keywords – “malaysian I don’t know” and just from that I was able to do this post.

I have contended, during the IJOK by elections, that up to now blogging had no real legitimacy, that we were merely commentators and not agents of change, and this was later confirmed in an authoritative article from the Guardian that Bloggers wont change the world .

The reality for most blogs is that we would be lucky to get 100 hits a day and typically its from the same people mostly friend. So BLOGS while widely available, only attract a few who are interested in the angle that is been taken by the blog author. Bloggers, unlike journalist are not trained to write to sell. We just write.

The more the Government reacts to the perceived threat of bloggers, especially with threats and arrests etc, the more people are going to blog. Why? Simple, Most people realize that while they go out and vote, no matter how they vote, BN will still rule. Election rules in a any democracy always favor the standing giant. BN is like MILO. Every other chocolate drink can try to dislodge MILO but is will never happen. Don’t believe me, then go ask Oveltine.

The monopoly always has to be careful of unintended consequences. In this case, the unintended consequence of this perceived threat by bloggers: is that them more the government reacts to it in a way that is perceived as unfair or “bullying” more people will blog. And as more people blog we are starting to notice talent. YES, there are bloggers out there who, at least based on their writings, are demonstrating their ability to think and articulate issues very clearly, impartially with no racial bias.

While all political systems make it hard for talent to rise, blogs are creating opportunity for those who want to speak, to be heard, without the cost or patronage to any party.

My take is that for this election, bloggers will be making a lot of noise but little progress. It is still all very new. The next elections – blogging will become a real legitimate platform and the best bet for the government is to accept that – if good governance is practiced, at all levels of government and by the elected representatives, then there is nothing to worry about. If bad governance is practiced, with or without blogs, the news will come out.

Syed Aidid, like you I too hate this daily stuff. It sickens me to the stomach. But then I realize that after 20 odd years of suppression, when suddenly the lid is lifted all kinds of crap starts coming out. And lets not be fooled, its all about power. Anwar doesnt give 2 sh**s about people. He is no better than any of the UMNO guys.

But then look at the ACA arrest of the immigration people. This corruption has been going on for years but always no action. now UMO is under pressure so they take some action. Note everytime Pak Lah is under pressure a few more corruption cases will get dealt with.

So this is all part of the process. Becasue we are so short of visible leadership talent -the is no strong dark horse who can step in and kick Pak LAh, Najib, Anwar and the rest out. That will in effect stop this nonsense.

    Dr Seikh,

Bloggers are no different from the people in the coffee shops etc who gossip and back bite etc. We are no different except for 1 thing. Whatever we write, the whole world get to read whereas in a coffee shop the gossip is limited to the people around.

As far as bloggers being “penyamun tarbus” with nothing better to do… well the fact that that is your opinion makes you no different from us, because you are making accusations that are just as unfounded. I’ll bet that you cant event tell me of the thousands of bloggers, how many actually participate in demos.

So you, like me are probably sick and tired of being stuck in traffic jams because of the police road blocks, wasting time and petrol.

But the great thing is that because you choose to express your disgust for bloggers in this blog, without fear or favor, your opinion too get published for the whole world to read. And I can accept what you say without feeling any malice towards you.

    Blogging is a great hobby!

Please keep up with your comments my friend. I really appreciate it.

This is one wayang kulit that is making Malaysia the lauging stock of the world. Wasn’t the ACA suppose to investigate top Immigration officals regarding files to the Mongolian’s murder ..? suddenly they arrested top immigration officials for “ILLIGAL IMMIGRANTS” simply to get him out of the picture and fool Malaysian that he’s already dealt with, but with what offence???

Why is there no ongoing investigtion regarding Immigration Files linking to the murder?

Where is Saiful the 22 yr. old devil hiding the one who is behaving like a 2 year old and could not resist a 61 year old man having the better of him. Where is the coward Saiful’s police report?

Why is Bala(from Hero to ZERO)the prime informant missing from the picture? The important persons to the Mongolian murder seem to vanish in thin air and ones speaking out ‘Aressted’!

What happen to the “Condo Mewah” investigation that they made a big ha hu about & where is the report to ‘condo mewah’ drama!

The regular news on FM now begins with ’sports news’ or ‘foreign news’ If there is any news on the political saga its always bias towards you know who!!! Internet sites even news on the net is blocked. Why are we Malaysian deprived of our rights? THe last thing this country needs is another HITLER!!!!

WHO ELSE HAS THE POWER TO MAKE THE POLICE & JUDICIARY SYSTEM WORK AGAINST THE RULE OF LAW !

The first 40mil budget to move the Eye(sore) of M’sia to Malacca then we have our very clever
DPM announce that the cabinat approved a wooping 50 mil. to flush out illigal immigrants in Sabah??? What bunch of nonsense!!!!! Another 10 mil renovation for his & DOtty’s “rumah mewah”
What about pumping such funds into our schools, and saving the country from the depression of price hike etc. So much can be done in our country with 50 mil. and you brain wiring gone wrong want to spend it on sending illigals what …!!!! On a 1 st. class Malaysian Airline seat???? I don’t believe these people even have a decent meal to begin with!!!!! Listening to you leaders and your abuse of power seem endless its sucking oxygen out from the air and we the rakyat are suffocating from you listening and living this nightmare day in and day out. What a nation of CORRUPTED leaders LIARS, ROBBERS & MURDERES and you call yourself Muslims!!! SHAME ON YOU!!!

The million dollar question is, who has the formulae for Malaysia to be the world class competitor.
Barisan Nasional is far from it, with its low class mentality.

So, we are only left with Pakatan Rakyat.I think they have that world class material in their leadership.
    Corrupt-free,accountability,integrity,tested-strength,’people’s- needs-first’ approach,professionalism,upright-conduct,cost-mindedness,reasonable personal-lifestyle,sound business- knowledge,reliable administrators,learned in all fields,and so forth.

What Malaysia needs is not quantity( a majority of same minded politicians)but quality.
Whats the point of having a majority of unqualified, unprofessional parlimentarians as compared to a minority of clever politicians? (politicians who know national level problem solving)

Pakatan Rakyat has the advantage over the ‘deflated’ UM-No when it comes to leadership and management of the country’s resourses.
    Lets hope for the best.
